Heart Hospital of Arizona Helistop, Phoenix, Arizona
Owner: Heart Hospital of Arizona
Architect: The Stein-Cox Group, Phoenix, Arizona; HDR Architecture, Dallas, Texas
Contractor: FEC Heliports, Cincinnati, Ohio

The Heart Hospital of Arizona, constructed in 1998, provides cardiovascular specialty services to much of Arizona. Initially built as a two-story structure, the building was designed for vertical expansion to three stories. Ultimately, the hospital owner wanted a rooftop helistop but needed another landing site in the interim. The design team adopted a unique approach in that they provided an aluminum helideck just above ground level in a vacant part of the campus. That helideck will be moved to the roof during construction of the third floor. This saved the hospital the cost of building a concrete ground level helistop that would eventually be demolished. For ease of transferring the helistop to its new home on the building, its supplier, FEC Heliports, installed it on the ground with the same support spacing used in the building. The helistop was installed at its interim location in 1998 and is scheduled for relocation to the roof in 2000. Heliplanners assisted the entire design team with design and permitting issues.
