Huntington Memorial Hospital Helistop Pasadena, California
Owner: Huntington Memorial Hospital,
Architect: HDR Architects, Omaha, Nebraska

Huntington Memorial Hospital had an existing rooftop helistop on its La Vina Building. While that facility had served the hospital's medical transport needs for many years, it had several deficiencies and did not meet current California design criteria. With the planned vertical expansion of a nearby wing, Huntington's administration determined that it could build a new helistop that would meet current standards, improve patient service and accommodate medical transport needs for many years into the future. HDR, Huntington's architect, retained Heliplanners to assist with the helistop's design and to shepherd the project through the agency approval process. The project was designed to accommodate the large Sikorsky SH-3H helicopter recently acquired by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for search and rescue purposes. It is the first helistop in the Los Angeles area designed for those aircraft, which are much larger than other air medical aircraft operating in the region. Heliplanners received final approval from Caltrans' Aeronautics Program for the helistop in 1998. The helistop is now operational.
