Mercy San Juan Hospital responded to
the County of San Diego's request for proposals to initiate Level II trauma
service. The project included building a new emergency wing with a rooftop
helistop. The design team carefully crafted precise flight paths to help
overcome significant public opposition at this noise-sensitive site surrounded
on all sides by single family residences. Heliplanners assisted the architect
and other design team members with flight path selection, design and permitting
needs. The helistop was approved by Caltrans' Aeronautics Program and opened
for service in April 1999.
