Victor Valley Community Hospital found a need to accommodate helicopter transport of ill and injured patients in Southern California's high desert region. A CHAMPUS contract with the Army convinced hospital officials to direct the design team to design the facility to accommodate aircraft as large as the Army's Sikorsky UH-60 Blackhawk. It quickly became evident from surveying the densely developed campus that an elevated helistop was needed to meet obstruction clearance criteria. Since hospital staff ruled out retrofitting a helistop to existing hospital buildings, the decision was made to build a separate stand-alone helistop structure. The resulting landing deck surface is 17 feet above ground and features a three-level ramp to transfer patients between the helicopter and ground level, from which they are moved to the emergency entrance. Heliplanners assisted the hospital and design team with site selection, design and permitting through five levels of government. The helistop became operational in 19--.
